April visit with my parents

At the end of April, my parents came to visit to check out my new digs and make sure that I'm staying out of trouble. We had a pretty wild couple of days, going to festivals, competitions, celebrations, and seminars.

Ocean Beach Monster Surf Competition

Our first stop was to the Ocean Beach Pier to watch the Monster Surf Competition. While we were there, I took advantage of the beautiful scenery to get a few couples shots of my parents.

Chicano Park Festival

Next we took a trip to Chicano Park to enjoy the Hispanic Festival and munch on all the goodies they had there!

Earth Fest

Earth Fest is held every year in Balboa Park on Earth Day. It's a incredible celebration with parades, displays of environmental products, non-profit organizations, commercial earth-friendly vendors, and musicians of all types.

Mission de Alcala

Before heading home, we stopped by the Mission de Alcala located down the street from my new place. It was surprisingly large, and orate for a California mission.

Carlsbad Flower Fields

On Monday, we spent a good portion of the day enjoying the Carlsbad Flower fields and their huge gardens of Ranaculus flowers. They were in full bloom in all sorts of colors. The flower fields created great opportunities for portrait shots.

Carlsbad State Beach

Before heading home, we stopped by the South Carlsbad State Beach to watch the pelicans flying to and from the Ocean to feed.

Grunion Run

In th evening, we enjoyed a Scripps Institute grunion run watching program. I was amazed at the number of grunion running the beach that day. Got some great shots of the mating ritual.

Embarcadero and Downtown San Diego

While we were waiting for a cruise of the San Diego Bay, we took a walk down the Embarcadero to enjoy the tranquility of downtown. We also took a trip to the top of the Manchester Hyatt to enjoy great views of downtown.

San Diego Bay Cruise

Then we took a cruise of the southern end of the San Diego Bay. It was quite educational... the guide named the ships and outlined the history of 32nd street Naval Station and NAB Coronado.

Biking Coronado

We capped off the day with a 4-person bike ride along the Coronado coast. What a riot it was trying to peddle a 4-person bike with three people. =)
