Hiking Two Harbors, Catalina Island

Jon and I did a long weekend camping trip to explore the remote Two Harbors on Catalina Island. And what a unique location we found!

Two Harbors is so named because the Catalina Harbor on the west almost meets up with the harbor on the east. A narrow isthmus connects the northern mountain ranges with the rest of the island.

December is a good time to visit Two Harbors. The northern town is set away from the busier southern town of Avalon, and free of tourist congestion.

Jon and I did a 12 mile hike on our first day. The mountainous terrain was rugged and desolate, offering unspoilt vistas for miles!

The hike started with an easy coastal walk full of beautiful rocky scenery!

It then turned to a steep climb up to the mountain ridge. No switchbacks, just a straight climb up. A workout for all leg muscles!

Views from the ridgeline were fantastic with the setting sun casting a yellow glow on the western face of the island.

Sunset in Catalina Harbor

You have to wonder how many times this tank has been shot.

After sleeping through 40 degree nighttime weather, this sunrise view of Two Harbors from our campground was particularly rewarding!

On Sunday we did a steep (treacherous) hike up the southern face of the Catalina Harbor and were rewarded with a wonderful overlook of the two harbors.

Hiking at Two Harbors is not for the faint of heart.
