I normally find the sound of crickets soothing at night. This morning, however, was an exception. My iPhone went off with the loud cricket sound at 5AM. Yes, it was the big day for Delphine. Maybe somewhere inside me I knew I would find cricket sound soothing, and maybe we would sleep and miss the flight so Delphine would have stay for another day. My plan failed miserably.
As I drove her to the airport we tried to joke and laugh about things. Told each other not to worry, eat healthy, exercise regularly, and not to put fake away status on our Skypes.
When we came to the counter and showed her paperwork to the clerk which clearly states her extra luggage allowance, she refused and told us the exception only applies for active duty and not for civilians (Even though Delphine was told by her employer the otherwise). At the end, they accepted both luggages with no extra charge which were forcing the 50-pound limit.
After we checked all the luggage, we sat down and took this photo. This is our last photo in San Diego as of May 9th, the mother's day. Today, for the first time, I felt the sadness of all lonely mothers who were away from their loved ones.
As I texted her later today: No, I am not crying. There is something in my eyes.
